Day 42: Behemoth - The Satanist

Artist:   Behemoth
Album:  The Satanist
Source:  Spotify

Pre-listening Notes:  Behemoth is a Polish death/black metal band.  They have been doing it for a very long time, this is their 10th album.  I saw them once.  I have only briefly touched upon some of their earlier work, so this is almost like I am a new fan.  Here goes!

Initial Reaction:  It starts out pretty slowly with some guitars and drums, then the vocals come in and add a nice layer to the epic intro.  Then about halfway through the song, some blasts of speed come in.  This rips!  Nice mix of slower parts into fast parts.

Random Thoughts:  Then song two, Furor Divinus, starts off with some speed.  This is awesome, there is something about each of these songs that keep things interesting.  The tempo changes work just fine.  There is some heaviness to this and some cool guitar parts, as well.  This just keeps pummeling song after song.  I really like the vocals, his voice fits the music very well, but is just clean enough that I can understand what he is saying.  The song In the Absence ov Light was ripping along, then broke down to a spoken word part about 2 minutes in.  Even with the break in the middle, this is my favorite track so far, it's extremely brutal!  The last song is a little longer, but keeps the same theme of the whole album in tact.

Final Reaction:  This ruled!  It was heavy, it was fast, it was brutal, it was everything I expect out of a metal record.  Will listen again, will check out earlier records, will pay more attention the next time I get to see them play.

Final Grade:  8.5/10
