Artist: Diamond Youth
Album: Shake EP
Source: Spotify
Pre-listening Notes: Diamond Youth is members of Trapped Under Ice and Down to Nothing, but apparently sound nothing like those bands. They are described as similar to Jimmy Eat World, Weezer, Samiam, and and Nada Surf. So, this should be interesting.
Initial Reaction: Almost a surfy feel to the intro, then it ramps up a little, and it is definitely somewhere near the mid to late 90's pop punk realm. Vocals are alright, a little more drawn out and not as upbeat and catchy as I was expecting.
Random Thoughts: The songs have a more modern feel to them, I feel like I can almost hear a little Queens of the Stone Age influence in this second song, Can't Shake the Feeling. Not much going on in the way of variety here. The only real variety is in the one song was a little bit longer than the others. There is one song that comes in under a minute, it's a slightly more upbeat and aggressive.
Final Reaction: This wasn't terrible, very much on the QOTSA worship. The description I read didn't really describe them that well. It just never really had that sound that hit me in the gut and said take notice of this band. I'm curious where they will go when they grow a little more as a band, but until then I was pretty just meh on this.
Final Grade: 6.0/10
